A 44-year-old woman underwent a major glossectomy at a Las Vegas hospital. She was discharged approximately three days after surgery. Within ten hours of arriving home, she experienced a massive bleed that led to her death. She left behind a 16-year-old son.
Plaintiff’s counsel alleged the discharge was premature and unsafe — the patient had not begun the proper healing process following a major oral surgery, and the hospital sent her home too early. The defense argued that the bleed was not predictable and that the patient would not have been safer in the hospital than at home.
The jury needed to understand the surgical procedure, the expected postoperative healing timeline, why the discharge was premature relative to the clinical standard of care, and how the timing of the bleed related to the stage of recovery. The medical testimony was detailed and lasted approximately one month. Without visual support, the jury would be left assembling a clinical narrative from expert testimony alone.
California Technical Media produced the litigation visuals used by plaintiff’s trial counsel in this case. The visuals were designed to support the medical expert testimony presented during the month-long trial — giving the jury a visual framework for the surgical anatomy, the postoperative healing process, and the clinical timeline leading to the patient’s death.
The Clark County, Nevada jury returned a verdict of approximately $5.7 million against the hospital.
